The Maintenance Man
So, the sweetest thing happened to me today, while I was sitting at home alone; sick.
There is a bit of a back story so I will start from the beginning…
When I first moved in I had put a Monarch Butterfly hanging on my apartment door.
One morning I walked out of my apartment to go to school and a guy that was doing renos in the building walked by and we politely smiled at eachother.
When I returned from school we ran into eachother again, and he said that he liked the butterfly on the door, and that it made him happy everytime he saw it. I was stoked because happiness + upliftment was the ultimate purpose of the butterfly being there.
There we a bunch of building notices on my door so I grabbed them and went inside. As I read them, I found one that said based on my tenancy agreement I had to take the butterfly down. I felt really awkward because he had JUST told me he liked it and then 20 minutes later I had to take it down.
Either way I hadn’t seen him for a while so it was whatever. Then on Wednesday, I was coming back from school and he was fixing something in the laundry room across the hall, so I made sure to stop and say hello, and let him know that I hadn’t taken it down because of him haha!
THEN - completely unrelated - my sink was clogged from the previous tenants and it had backed up and started to leak. I filled out a report and handed it to the office.
This morning I stayed home sick from school, and at 930 there was a knock on my door, and someone had come inside. I got out of bed, and to my shock it was THAT GUY! It turns out he is maintenance for my building, and i had no idea! haha - so he unclogged the drain for me, all the while being super sweet and respectful of my space. Then he came to let me know he was done in the kitchen, and hoped that I got better soon.
All in all he’s made a good impression.
.. then at 12:15 - there is a knock on my door - I got to answer it and there at the foot of my doorway is a cup of tea, soup and note that read:
“No one should have to cook for themselves when they are sick.” - Maintenance
And he was no where to be seen.. like a ghost!
It was the SWEETEST thing someone has ever done for me; particularily a stranger. I couldn’t believe that someone would actually go out and buy me soup and tea when they don’t even know me.
the Sweetest thing..
