A Vintage Bicycle Of My Very Own!
For some time now I have had this fascination with old things, or rather “vintage” pieces, from people’s day-to-day lives way back when. (A trait I’m pretty sure I inherit from my mother, who works in museums!) I’m not crazy about shelf stuff, like book ends and candle sticks - but rather the things that people used in their daily lives which have held up over the passing of time. I feel like they carry life, and I love the thought of them having stories and histories.
This process of moving has led me to a few wonderfully old and unique things, which seem to have just found their way into my life.
The first being an extremely old (and extremely heavy) Singer sewing machine - which (according to my mother) still works! And just needs a few tweaks here and there. It is BEAUTIFUL - made of cast iron, and has a detailed metal plate on the front. It was left behind at the apartment I used to live in. I absolutely love it, and am willing to lug it around with me until the end of my days… (although my mother and I have agreed on joint custody :P)
The second item is a lamp. I think its probably from the 60’s and it belonged to my friend Rod Campbell’s grandmother. It has a built in table too! It is wood, with a white shade that has gold trim. It gives off a nice warm, loving glow just like any lamp belonging to a grandmother would. I inherited it for Free, as my friend was trying to downsize his life in a short amount of time.
The third and final piece in my current collection - my new bicycle! I bought her today, and I couldn’t be more pleased. She is a red and white Zenith Cruiser from 1938!!! The man I bought it off of makes a hobby of buying and selling bikes. Apparently he’s had this one for a long time, but never seems to get much interest in it. I have NO idea why because it is just simply gorgeous. It has been re-done from top to bottom, but remains in its original colours. It has an original period-era saddle seat + BELL! There is no chrome - it is all polished metal, and the pedals articulate on 3 axles. The man put on a kick stand for me, AND gave me a basket. I bargained down his original asking price, and saved myself some money - even though what he was asking for it was COMPLETELY worth it. He said he bought it off of an old lady who had bought it off of another lady in the 60’s who had already owned it for about 30 years prior. I think the two of us will make a great pair. All I need now is a helmet and a very good lock :)
Can’t wait to take her for a spin.
Love,
CL.
